Breakthrough at 4,000 Meters: SENOHERS’ Distributed Power and CHP System Goes Live

SENOHERS has successfully delivered and commissioned its methanol reforming high-temperature PEM fuel cell (HT-PEMFC )cogeneration and backup power system in a high-altitude region exceeding 4,000 meters. Designed for extreme plateau environments, the system provides reliable, efficient, and low-carbon distributed power and heat — marking a major breakthrough for methanol hydrogen fuel cell technology in high-altitude applications.

Operating in thin air and freezing temperatures poses significant challenges for traditional power systems, often leading to reduced efficiency and slow startup. SENOHERS’ methanol-based HT-PEM technology stands out with exceptional adaptability to altitude, temperature, and harsh conditions. It delivers compact, silent, emission-free operation — and this latest deployment validates the system’s capability in real-world high-altitude scenarios, paving the way for wider adoption.

Fueled by methanol, the system produces hydrogen-rich gas on-site through reforming, which is then fed directly into the HT-PEM fuel cell stack to generate both electricity and heat. (Thermal output can be vented if not needed.) The system achieves up to 42% electrical efficiency and over 90% combined heat and power (CHP) efficiency. It supports both off-grid and grid-connected modes, delivering 220V or 380V AC and producing hot water at 50–85°C — ideal for powering lighting, appliances, EV chargers, and for space or water heating in residential or remote settings.

Because methanol is liquid and easy to transport and store, the system eliminates the need for high-purity hydrogen or complex hydrogen logistics. It performs reliably at altitudes up to 4,500 meters and in ambient temperatures from -40°C to 55°C, making it suitable for homes, industrial sites, off-grid locations, highlands, and island environments.
